Nonnie's Monthly Blog
Fall is here and the seasons of fun and love. My new collection of sock dolls include a Halloween Ghost, a witch, a snowman, a Santa with bag, and a sweet little angel. Watch for more of these little dears in the future. They are so much fun to make and such fun to collect.
Inspired by Shannon McConnachie's book "Stitches In Time", I have been experimenting with some old sock dolls myself. They are so much fun to make, I'm sure I'll be adding more and more.
Bunnies, Bunnies, Bunnies! It's that time of year and my bunnies have been multiplying like - well - like bunnies! They're all old and primitive and looking for good homes.
More snow again. Of course, it would be presumptive to think that the snow would be all gone in February but we did have two days of clear sidewalks, so I took advantage. Frankie, my cat, is looking forward to spring, too. He's getting old (like me) and doesn't like to be out very long in the cold.
Welcome to the middle of January. The sun is out but don't let that fool you. There is a wind chill of -40 and lots of snow on the ground. But when I see the cold in Minnesota, I realize just how bad it can get. I haven't been out for nearly 2 weeks. Even my cat, Frankie, goes out and turns around and comes right back in. It inspires me to clean house, organize things and start creating more things, so that's good, I guess. Actually, I've also read quite a few books and that's my most favorite thing to do. Join me in February to see what happens next.
Hoot Mon - would you believe that I made 50 of these little gingerbread men wearing Kilts for my church circle luncheon? Our former minister just came back from a trip to Scotland and he gave us a talk on his adventures. Well, I have about half of my pumpkins and fall decorations down now and am going to decorate for Christmas little by little. It's hard to believe that so many people have their homes all decorated and the outdoor lights on. Time to make my famous (in our family) English toffee. It's a favorite and very easy to make. Just in case you'd like to make some, here's the recipe:
NONNIE'S ENGLISH TOFFEE 1 cup of sugar 1/4 cup water 1 stick of butter
Put in a pan and cook on medium low, stirring only occasionally until your candy thermometer reaches 285 degrees. Beat and then pour onto a greased cookie sheet. Put in fridge and allow to cool.
Next: melt 1 cup of chocolate bits in your microwave and spread on the candy. I immediately sprinkle with chopped walnuts and press down. Cool and then turnover and repeat with chocolate bits and walnuts on the other side. Cool and then break into pieces and put in your favorite Christmas tin. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm!
Lizzies mammy made this dress for her with a linsey woolsey skirt. She had a scrap left so she made a dress for her dolly, too. During the colonial period, linsey woolsey, made with wool and linen, was a warm and inexpensive material used mostly for servants clothing. This linsey woolsey is made only for www.TheCountryLadyAntiques.com and can be purchased there. It is pulled and washed and can be dyed. Lizzie feels very special. She is 23" tall. $48.00 ppd
